The Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home and is often the place where people gravitate. Robust discussions and fun times are often had whilst standing, eating or sitting around the kitchen. In the open-plan style of today’s households, the kitchen often takes centre stage.

When Maret Larnach Styling stages a home for sale, we place items in the kitchen space to add style and functionality. Introducing a layered arrangement against the splashback or wall can create interest. For example, a wooden cutting board, a tall vessel and some funky wooden cutlery; mixing shapes, size and materials. Greenery always adds a warmth and appealability to any space. We also suggest putting away any countertop appliances and cooking utensils to make the space look less cluttered.

Layout is one of the most important things in kitchen design. Whether the layout is galley, L-shape, island bench or peninsula, what layout you choose ensure a functional and practical space. Of course the floorplan of your home will probably determine the layout of your kitchen, but you can always optimise the area to work better.

If you are renovating your kitchen, styling should be considered at the beginning of the renovation as the finishing touches are integral to the success of the final design. At Maret Larnach Styling we also recommend considering what else is in your home – keeping consistency for example in the fixtures, themes and colours throughout your home.

Often when Maret Larnach Styling is employed to help with interior consultations, we are asked about fixtures and fittings. Choosing the right colour for your taps, sink, door handles and even fridge can make a big difference to the look of your kitchen.

The advice we give for any space is to choose one hero piece and work around this. For example, choose a beautiful jade green subway tile as your splash back, and then choose what tap fixtures will work with this. Let this feature shine by not introducing another competing colour – keeping the rest of the kitchen simple and clean will allow the feature wall to be the hero.

Wherever possible, it’s a good idea to add fresh produce to your kitchen. Fresh fruit or vegetables in a beautiful bowl can make a stunning display on a kitchen island.

Another way to refresh your kitchen area is to update any lighting that you have. For example, if you have some pendant lights hanging over the bench choose some new lights in a style that reflects your interior, keeping in mind the size, style and proportions of the room.
